Student Grant

SUSI (Student Universal Support Ireland) is Ireland’s single national awarding authority for all higher and further education grants.

The student grant is the main source of financial help available from the Irish State for students in full-time Post Leaving Certificate Courses (PLCs). For eligible students, the grant is there to help with the various costs of participating in further education.

Family and/or personal income is a key factor that will be assessed when you apply for a student grant but there are also some other conditions. can help you to assess whether you are eligible and guide you in starting the process. In all cases, the official decision on eligibility is of course made by the grant-awarding bodies which is your local ETB (formerly VEC).

Back to Education Allowance

If you are unemployed, parenting alone or have a disability and are getting certain payments from the Department of Social Protection, you may be eligible for the Back to Education Allowance (BTEA).

You can qualify for the BTEA in different ways depending on your age and circumstances.

1. You must have been accepted onto a qualifying course

2. You must be

a) in receipt of a qualifying social welfare payment for a specified length of time


b) dependent on a person who can claim BTEA


You may qualify to participate in the BTEA scheme on a non-payment basis if you are:

c) Signing on for unemployment credits


d) submitting medical certificates for illness credits.


You will get an allowance equal to the maximum standard rate of Job-seeker’s Benefit including any increase(s) for qualified adult and/or dependent children (if eligible).

How to Apply

You must get written confirmation that you are registered as a full-time day student from the college registrar.

You should notify the Department of Social Protection by filling in the Back to Education Allowance application form which is available from your local Social Welfare Office.
